The Do-Not-Play List: 10 Songs That Kill the Dance Floor

By DJ Tommy Scott – Your Dallas Wedding DJ

When planning your wedding reception, one of the biggest questions couples ask is:

👉 “What songs should we NOT play?”

As a Dallas Wedding DJ, I’ve seen it all. Packed dance floors… and empty ones. The difference almost always comes down to song selection and timing.

If you want a full dance floor at your wedding, avoiding the wrong songs is just as important as picking the right ones.

Here’s my professional Do-Not-Play List based on real weddings across Dallas, Plano, McKinney, and all over DFW.

1. Celine Dion – My Heart Will Go On

A beautiful song—but it instantly shifts the mood from party to slow and emotional.

2. Macarena – Los Del Rio

Once a classic, now often overplayed and skipped by younger guests.

3. YMCA – Village People

Can work for certain crowds, but often feels outdated at modern weddings.

4. Chicken Dance

Fun for some—but most couples today prefer to skip it.

5. Who Let the Dogs Out – Baha Men

Short burst of energy… followed by a quick drop-off.

6. Hokey Pokey

Better suited for kids’ parties than wedding receptions.

7. Slow Songs at the Wrong Time

Dropping a slow song when the floor is packed is one of the fastest ways to clear it.

8. Too Many Line Dances in a Row

One is great. Multiple in a row? Guests sit down.

9. Songs with Long Intros

If it takes too long to “get to the good part,” people lose interest.

10. Songs Only the Couple Knows

Your favorites matter—but if guests don’t recognize it, they won’t dance.

Why This Matters for Your Wedding

A great wedding DJ doesn’t just play music—they read the room, adjust in real time, and keep the energy flowing.

That’s the difference between:

  • A playlist

  • And a professional Dallas Wedding DJ
